I have been knitting for 30 years, starting when my second daughter was one year old. My joy in knitting for children is the ability to make their imaginations come alive with a treasured, colorful sweater. These creations show full, almost painterly scenes, often with full skies and backgrounds.

Amarinalevin Handknits is a 190 page 8.5x11 magazine of knitting patterns for children’s sweaters. This book is a small collection of original designs in ages three to nine years. There are four patterns for each age: Three are pictorial intarsia patterns and the fourth is a traditional Scandinavian inspired pattern (there are two intarsia and two traditional patterns for size nine).

Sections in the beginning explain my process, design notes, tips about sizing up or down,  and basic instructions for knitting intarsia in general. I am assuming the reader has basic knowledge about knitting, or at least a willingness to try out my patterns. Each pattern has complete directions with sizing and gauge; full color graphs for the front, back, and sleeves; and a yarn list based on color and amounts. I recommend dk weight yarn, though I use worsted weight and dk weight yarn myself. There are also full color photos of the sweaters. The sweater shapes are simple and knit in stocking stitch.

Five Years: National Parks, Rocket, Saint George, Viking Ship

Seven Years: Horses, Mermaids, Norway Shield, Tractor

Nine Years: Astrology, Aurora, Flowers, Norse Myths
